I love making my own cleaning products (see my laundry detergent and granite cleaner recipes) and this is my latest favorite for quick cleaning and deodorizing for your toilets. These DIY Toilet Drop-In Cleaning Cubes are super simple to make and do a great job in between cleanings to freshen up, using the foaming power of citric acid. The little “bombs” are especially helpful if you have hard water like we do, as the citric acid helps to break down mineral deposits.
You will need:
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup citric acid powder
(you can get it in the store with the canning supplies, or online for a better value)
2 – 3 Tbsp of Liquid castile soap or 20-30 drops of Essential Oil*
Ice cube tray or silicone mold
*I use a peppermint castile soap or essential oil, but you can use whatever scent you prefer. If you want more disinfecting power, use a tea tree oil soap or essential oil.
Combine the baking soda and citric acid in a bowl. Once combined, slowly start adding the liquid castile soap or essential oils a few drops at time while stirring. The moisture will make the citric acid start to foam, so you want to add it very gradually to limit that reaction.
Add enough of the soap/oil until it is just moist enough to pack into your mold. If it is still a little dry, add just a few drops of water and stir well.
Pack into your molds, pressing down to compact.
Let dry for at least 12 hours or until completely dry.
Keep in an airtight container or bag. I like to keep a large mason jar full of them in each bathroom so I can drop them in whenever.
Drop into your toilet bowl and let the foaming action go to work. Once the whole cube has dissolved, use a toilet brush to do a quick scrub and flush.
